Fictional Project — Handymen Company

Handy Grands

College Assignment

🛠️ Overview

At first this was a college assignment to create a tri-fold brochure that explores the technical side of typography and proper punctuation. After completing the assignment, I went ahead to expand upon the project with various types of advertisements.

A little bit about the fictional handymen company provided by my professor, Handy Grands is a fictional company where they believe home improvement shouldn’t be stressful. That’s why they have built a service around reliability, craftsmanship, and care. Their team is made up of experienced, retired professionals who take pride in doing things the right way. With decades of hands-on experience, they bring skill, patience, and attention to detail to every project, whether it’s a quick repair or a more involved renovation.

🧠 Brainstorming

Their main target audience are established homeowners that are ready to build a trustworthy relationship with a handymen company. While brainstorming for the layout, I toyed with an idea as an animal being the mascot for the company. When I thought of turtles and how they carried their home on their backs, I knew I wanted to draw a house within the logo itself. I knew I wanted to use a navy blue establishing trust and the green signifying growth. Before solidifying the colors, I played around with reds and various color combinations as shown in the progress photos.

📄 Brochure

The body content was provided and it was my job to fit everything in appropriately. My process throughout this project was putting myself in the customer’s perspective and how they will interact with the brochure. First I sketched a potential layout and then went into InDesign to gain a better understanding of how much content I can fix in. With feedback from my professor and classmates, I was able create a polished brochure that is fitting for the fictional company.

🏁 Outcome

Overall, this project was a wonderful experience on gaining a better understanding of the technical side of typography and proper punctuation. Outside of college, I enjoyed pushing myself on how the same content can be used in various type of advertisements.
